WAP/PDA Scenarios in Sales

Purpose

Sales WAP/PDA scenarios will make the sales process more efficient by allowing companies to simplify and automate their sales tasks. Simultaneously, WAP/PDA scenarios will provide all the functions needed to focus effectively on customer relationships. In this section, you can find a brief description on the WAP/PDA Sales scenarios in CRM. These applications allow you to perform various tasks anytime and from anywhere, via WAP/PDA devices. As a sales representative, during your work day you can view and update every step of the sales life-cycle and be linked to your enterprise.

Integration

The WAP/PDA scenarios use the CRM Release 2.0C infrastructure, using RFC functions and transferring them through the ITS to the devices. The below illustration depicts an example of a wireless phone (WAP) and a PDA connection:

In WAP phones, the connection is made through the WAP Gateway (compressed WML to HTTP) and then is transferred to the web server of the Internet Transaction Server (ITS). Finally, the ITS connects to the CRM System.

The PDA connection is connected directly to the ITS as it uses the HTTP Protocol and exchanges HTML data.

Use

WAP & PDA

Mobile computing devices are becoming more popular and less expensive, everyday. It is expected that in the near future, WAP-enabled phones and PDAs will replace classic PCs and laptop computers.

Current wireless technologies are still in their initial stages and, as a result, a large variety of alternatives are currently offered and used. Mobile devices are personal tools for users and should support, assist, and accompany on-going activities.

WAP scenarios contain the essential information that is required for "on-the-go".

PDAs were designed with a different purpose in mind than WAP-enabled devices. Due to greater flexibility (larger screen displays mean more possibilities/ fields shown simultaneously and longer, clear texts), there are several differences between WAP-enabled devices and PDAs, but both of them introduce new opportunities:

In the table below you can find the main differences displayed by category. These differences are more oriented to application limitations:

Category

WAP

PDA

Display

Small display and low resolution

Larger display and graphical support

Data Entry Interaction

  • Limited user-input facilities, especially for characters
  • Point&Click not supported
  • Few soft-key functions
  • Easy navigation and easier than WAP to input text but still limited user-input capability
  • Point&Click supported by touch-screen

Communication

Limitation of amount of data, 1000-2500 bytes

No specific limitations

General

Accessable and handy, usable also for telephone calls

Accessable, larger but is still pocket size
