What does flexible update mean?

The direct update methods used previously used DataSources for attributes and texts connected directly with master data tables and text tables for the InfoObject.

In the flexible update, the master data and text tables now appear as data targets. The flexible update is used to fill these data targets from master data and text InfoSources that were created for the InfoObjects listed above. This enables you to use update rules for the data targets (master data/text tables) in addition to the transfer rules already used.

What are the advantages of a flexible update?

Other than the advantage of using update rules, the main advantage is that several different data targets can be filled using a master data or text InfoSource with a flexible update. Until now, you could fill only one InfoObject directly from the DataSource. This provides many new options for deriving and distributing master data in SAP BW (see also, Scenarios for Flexible Updates).

How do InfoObjects change with the flexible update?

The InfoObjects named above (master data tables and text tables) are now defined as data targets and appear in the InfoProvider tree under the InfoArea 0CA ® 0CA_IO Cross-application Master Data (Flexible Update).

InfoSources have been created with flexible update for each of the InfoObjects listed above, and these have been connected with the existing DataSources (attributes, texts).

The transfer rules used until now were transferred accurately from the direct update. The InfoSources with flexible update appear in the hierarchy tree of the InfoSources (application components) under the same nodes under which the corresponding InfoObjects were found previously.

To load the data (master data/texts), you create InfoPackages for the InfoSources with flexible update. Here, you enter the InfoObjects (master data and text tables) as data targets.
