Defining the Order of Entry Points

Use

If your Enterprise Portal has multiple roles/worksets and you want to define the order of the entry points on the navigation bar yourself, you can define priorities for the entry points.

Keep in mind that you cannot define the priorities for individual users. The priority is always defined for one view in the portal and only make sense if all your users are assigned to the same roles and all of them have the same view in the portal.

Prerequisites

You have created roles/worksets for your users.

You have defined which entries should appear on the first level of the navigation bar in a role/workset. These are the entry points for the top-level navigation in the portal.

The next step is to decide what would be the best order for the entry points in the top-level navigation.

Principles of Defining Priorities

You define priorities for the entry points by assigning a certain value to each of the entry points. You may only define values greater than 0 for the priorities. You can also specify numbers with decimal values, for example, 1, 1.5, 1.75, 2 and so on.

The smaller the value of the entry point, the further left it moves on the navigation bar, that is the entry point with the lowest value appears to the far left and the others follow in the order of their priorities. The entry points without a priority appear in any order.

Note that SAP Portals already delivers roles and worksets with prioritized entry points. Remember this when carrying out your own priority definitions:

01: Already set for 'Home'
03: Already set for 'Portal Admin'
04: Already set for 'Content Admin'
05: Already set for 'KM Admin'
06: Already set for 'Portal Monitoring'
07: Already set for 'System Configuration'
08 to 19: Reserved for future SAP Portals Business Packages (SAP Portals' namespace)

20 to 29: Available for customers (customer namespace)

30 to 40: Reserved for future SAP Portals Business Packages (SAP Portals' namespace)
41 plus: Should not be used

The more often a point of entry is used, the further to the left it should be placed (in other words, the smaller the value it is given should be). For example, 20 should be used for entry points that are used daily, and 29 for entry points that are rarely used.

If you want to place two entry points next to each other, you should use a priority of 20.1 and 20.2, for example.

Procedure

Move a role/workset to the edit area of the Role Editor.

Click on the entry point of the role and enter a value for Entry Point Priority.

Define priorities for all the roles/worksets whose entry points you want to place at a certain location in the top-level navigation of the portal.

Result

You changed the random order of the entry points in the portal to suit your requirements.

Example

For example you can decide that entry points F1 and F2 of role 1 should appear in the second and fifth location, entry points F5 and F6 of role 2 at the sixth and fourth location, and entry points F8 and F9 of role 3 at the first and third location of top-level navigation. The following graphic shows how you should define the priorities for the entry points so that they appear in the desired order in your portal.
