Mobile Reporting

Purpose

You can also display BW Web reports on mobile devices, like, for example, WAP compatible mobile telephones.

BW Web reports for mobile reporting with WAP are described as WAP reports. As a basis for this Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is used as the transmission log and Wireless Markup Language (WML) is used as the description language.

Process

Mobile Reporting with WAP

  1. You connect to your mobile terminal (for example, a WAP compatible mobile telephone) with a WAP service provider. When you do this, you can use a WAP Gateway or WAP server, which will enable you to transfer contents from the Internet to the mobile terminal.
  2. The WAP Gateway passes on the requested URL to the required Web server, for example, the ITS.
  3. A special service is specified in the requested URL (bwwap) that indicates to the ITS, that WML is requested instead of HTML. The ITS now calls up the BW system and requests the query data.
  4. The data is transferred in raw form and converted into WML on the ITS.
  5. The result is returned to the WAP Gateway, which now converts the WML text data into a compressed bytecode and sends it to the mobile terminal.

By compressing the data, the transfer time is reduced. Moreover, most devices have a limited memory at present.
