Exception Reporting

Use

Exception reporting is the selection and highlighting of objects that are in some way different or critical. Results that fall outside a set of predetermined threshold values (exceptions) are highlighted in color. This enables you to identify immediately any results that deviate from the expected results.

Exception reporting allows you to determine the objects that are critical for a query, both online, and in background processing.

Integration

You define exceptions in the Business Explorer Analyzer, and evaluate them online when you execute a query. If you want to evaluate exceptions for a large number of queries, this is done in the background. These exceptions are scheduled for background processing in the Reporting Agent of the Administrator Workbench.

Prerequisites

You have defined a query that you want to use for exception reporting.

Functions

Exception reporting is made up of three function areas: The exception definition, the online evaluation of exceptions, and the evaluation of exceptions in background processes.

Exceptions are determined in the query definition and are valid globally for a particular query in all workbooks.

The exception definition includes:

Defining Exceptions

The cell areas in the results area of an executed query are colored if they contain values that do not fall within the exceptions you defined previously.

Settings that you make in the Reporting Agent are processed in the background. The result is displayed in the Alert Monitor, and logged in the exception log. If exceptions do occur, it is possible to trigger a follow-up action in the Reporting Agent (a mail is sent to the person responsible, for example). The Alert Monitor is part of the Business Explorer. You access the Alert Monitor from the open dialog in the BEx Analyzer toolbar. The number of exceptions that occur is displayed according to the selection of traffic light colors. The system will run an authorization check before displaying the exceptions, if you want it to. The exceptions are displayed in a hierarchy with the following levels: InfoArea, InfoCube, query, view, and exception.
