From R/3 Plug-in (release PI 99 and PI-A 99), all plug-ins are compatible with each other. R/3 plug-ins also support various levels of upgrade.

If a customer has an R/3 plug-in for R/3 release 3.1I and wants an exchange upgrade to R/3 release 4.5B, that customer is guaranteed an R/3 plug-in upgrade for R/3 release 4.5B.
When the plug-in is being used in combination with Industry Solutions (IS), there are two types of compatibility involved:
Technical Compatibility |
IS Add-Ons and R/3 Plug-Ins have no objects in common. Both can be installed in the same system. |
Functional Compatibility |
Component functionality (SAP APO; SAP BW; and so on) can be used for industry-specific business processes. To achieve this, the IS Add-Ons need to be adapted and enhanced. |
IS Add-Ons and R/3 Plug-Ins can modify standard objects in the R/3 system. This can cause conflicts in the system. In the future, a combination of R/3 Plug-Ins and certain IS Add-Ons will be possible. From R/3 release 4.6B, R/3 Plug-Ins are free of modifications and can be freely combined with IS Add-Ons. From PI 2000.1 this is also the case for R/3 releases 4.0b and 4.5B. This ensures technical compatibility.
It is SAP’s goal to implement functional compatibility between Plug-Ins and IS Add-Ons for certain industries. The first projects in this regard have already begun and, in the case of IS Automotive, been completed.
From R/3 release 4.6B, R/3 Plug-In PI 2000.1 is part of Industry Solutions. (The only exception to this is that within IS Utilities, the R/3 Plug-In is only delivered for CCS. IS-U/FERC and IS-U/WCM are implemented without R/3 Plug-In.)
