Summary of Contents

The ABAP Workbench Tools documentation is an introduction to the different tools that make up the ABAP Workbench - the graphical programming environment for developing ABAP applications.

When you have finished reading the documentation, you will be able to use the ABAP Workbench to write programs, check them for errors, and analyze them. You do not have to read this documentation in order from start to finish. However, we recommend that you read at least the overview and the section about information and navigation.

The documentation consists of the following sections:

Overview of the Workbench Introduces the Workbench, its tools, and the features that are common to all tools.

Information and Navigation Discusses the navigation tools found in the Workbench. These are the Repository Browser, the application hierarchy, and the Repository Information System. These tools are useful for locating development trees.

ABAP Editor Explains how to use the ABAP Editor to create and edit ABAP programs.

Screen Painter Describes how to create and edit screens using the Screen Painter, with emphasis on the graphical fullscreen editor.

Menu Painter Describes the Menu Painter, which you use to create menus and toolbars. It also goes on to describe area menus as a means of creating user-specific menus.

Function Builder Explains how to use the Function Builder to create function modules. Function modules allow you to create routines that can be used across several applications.

SQL Trace Describes the SQL Trace tool, with which you can check for weaknesses in your ABAP reports and transactions.

Runtime Analysis Explains how to use the Runtime Analysis tool to measure the runtime of a report or transaction. The Runtime Analysis tool creates lists of expensive statements, summarizes table accesses, and shows hierarchies of a program's overall flow.

ABAP Debugger Describes how to use the ABAP Debugger. With the Debugger you can stop a program while it is running and examine the flow and the results of each statement during execution.

System Logs Describes how to use SAP system logs. Each SAP application server has a local log that contains messages generated by that server. This section also explains about central locking functions.

Alphanumeric Fullscreen Editor Describes the procedures in the alphanumeric fullscreen editor that are different from those in the graphical fullscreen editor.

Command Mode in the ABAP Editor Describes the commands that you can use when using the ABAP Editor in command mode.
