Changing Data Types and Field Lengths of Existing Fields

If a data element is assigned to the field, you must change the technical field attributes (data type, length, number of decimal places) in the domain of the data element.

Procedure for Fields with Data Elements

  1. Double-click on the name of the data element.
  2. You go to the data element maintenance screen.

  3. Double-click on the name of the domain.
  4. You go to the domain maintenance screen.

  5. Choose Domain ® Display ® Change.
  6. Make the required changes and save your entries.

Note that this change affects all the table fields that refer to the particular domain. Foreign keys could become inconsistent and conversions required. You should therefore consider the effects of this action before changing the domain by checking how the domain is used in other tables with Utilities ® Where-used list (in the maintenance screen of the domain).

  7. Activate the domain.

The table is activated again and the table field is adjusted to the domain change.

Procedure for Fields with Direct Type Entry

  1. Choose Edit ® Direct type entry in the field maintenance screen of the table.
  2. Values can now be entered in fields DTyp, Length and Short text.

  3. Change the entries for the type and length.
  4. If you want to change the number of decimal places of a field, double-click on the field name.

You go to the detailed display of the field attributes. You can make the required entry in the Decimal places field.

  5. Save your entries and activate the table.

Note that a table conversion will normally be necessary (see Adjusting Database Structures) if you change the field attributes.
