Managing Background Processing

To submit a job for background processing (schedule a job), you can use the following options:

Tools: There are two tools that you can use for managing background jobs:

More information: Managing Jobs with the Job Overview

More information: Using the Job Performance Analysis

More information: Using the Graphical Job Scheduling Monitor.

If you have one of the external batch/workflow management/background processing tools that are certified for use with R/3, then you have an additional alternative: You can manage R/3 background processing from the external tool. For more information, see the internet page of the R/3 certification group in SAPnet.

Tasks: No matter which management tool you use, the key tasks that you must perform are as follows:

No job can run until it is released. Jobs of users with the release authorization are automatically released. You, as administrator, must check and release all other jobs to run. See Releasing Jobs.

See Managing Jobs with the Job Overview.

If a job terminates abnormally or any other background processing problem occurs, then you can have the alert monitoring system warn you automatically. See Displaying Job Alerts.

If a job has been aborted, the first place to check for information on the problem is the job log.

More information: Displaying a Job Log.

You can delete individual jobs as required. You can also reorganize the background processing system to delete old jobs that are no longer needed.

More information: See Deleting Jobs.

In addition to these basic job handling operations, there is a number of other operations that you can use for accessing individual job components, changing job definitions and for job administration. Functions are also provided for testing jobs. Many of these operations can be performed both interactively and through the programming interface.

More information: Defining External Commands

You can keep watch over job processing with the list-oriented and graphical monitors (see the links shown above).

Finally, you can also use the alert monitor to watch the background processing system and receive warnings of problems. See Displaying Job Alerts.

If a job terminates abnormally, then you will need to analyze and correct the problem. See Analyzing Terminated Jobs.

In the event that a problem occurs that involves the background processing system itself, then you can also turn to the trouble shooting guide in Troubleshooting the Background Processing System.
