New Transaction SE09: Workbench Organizer 

Description

The Workbench Organizer is available in the ABAP/4 Workbench for organizing software development projects. It is designed to support both large and small, as well as central and local development projects.

The Workbench Organizer provides assistance for organizing development projects by allowing you to distribute project work for individual developers or teams among different change requests. All development objects that are modified, are entered in change requests. They are then reserved for the exclusive use of these change requests and are locked against maintenance or development work by other users until the request is released. Other users can only display the objects.

When a change request is released, a version of the object is automatically created enabling comparison and retrieval of previous versions.

If development activities are not carried out in the production system but in one or more development or test systems, transporting the changed objects is started with the release of a change request to the subsequent SAP System.

Transaction SE09 can be accessed by selecting:
Tools -> ABAP/4 Workbench -> Overview -> Workbench Organizer

The previous Correction and Transport System (transaction SE01) is replaced to a large extent by the Workbench Organizer, which is integrated into the development environment (ABAP/4 Development Workbench) and adapted to the standards used. However, transaction SE01 is retained with its full functionality in Release 3.0. Please refer to the online manual on the Workbench Organizer for detailed documentation.

The most important new functions in comparison to the previous Correction and Transport System are:

• The Workbench Organizer is completely integrated into the development environment. Navigation is possible in both directions, so that you can branch into the Workbench Organizer from every transaction of the development environment, as well as into the corresponding editor by double-clicking on individual objects within an object list.

• The Workbench Organizer is accessed via a hierarchical list that displays all the change requests that can be used. The requests shown can be expanded to access several levels of detail up to the object list.

• The previous variety of terms (transport requests, corrections, repairs and so on) is greatly simplified. Corrections and repairs are now both designated as tasks. Every change request includes one or more tasks, which can be allocated to different users. When work has been completed the tasks are released to the assigned change request.

• In overviews and selection lists, the internally used request and task numbers are replaced by informative short descriptions or user names.

• Change requests can be transportable or local. Whether objects are entered in a local or a transportable request depends on the system settings (see below). After setting the system appropriately, the correct request type and the target system (for transportable requests) are automatically allocated and no longer need to be maintained by the user. The system can be set so that modifications to SAP objects and individual developments are entered and transported together in transportable change requests.

• Linking several users for a project has become simpler and significantly more transparent. When a change request is created, different users can be allocated to it. Later, if several change requests need to be linked, they can simply be merged.

• An authorization concept has been introduced that allows you to restrict access to the functions of the Workbench Organizer for certain users. See the separate release notes for more information.

• Certain functions of the Transport System which are not linked directly to work in the ABAP/4 Workbench are still provided by transaction SE01. In particular, these are functions for processing object lists or transporting originals or copies (transports with or without change authorization).
